WHAT IS SEER?

The Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) generally rates the efficiency of air conditioners. The higher the SEER rating, the more energy efficient the unit is. 

SEER is the BTU of cooling output during its normal annual usage, divided by the total electric energy input in watt-hours during the same period. (SEER = BTU ÷ W•h). 

If your unit is sized in “tons” multiply the tons of cooling by 12,000 to convert it to BTU/h. 

Why is SEER rating important?

The SEER rating indicates energy efficiency. With energy rates continuing to climb, in part due to spikes in natural gas prices, the operating costs of comfort systems has become a prime consideration. 

Replacing your older SEER 9 rated air conditioning unit with a modern SEER 13 rated unit will reduce power consumption by 30%. Depending on the usage rate and cost of electricity in your area, this could result in a savings of $300 or more per year. A more energy efficient air conditioning system could pay for itself over the life of the unit.
